Molten Salts
Distortion can produce out of tolerance part dimensions, stresses leading to cracking and premature failure. When quenching or tempering your parts, molten salt is the proven quench media to use in controlling distortion. DuBois has over 100 years of experience in the molten salt technology; providing products with wide operating temperature ranges and consistent performance. Our salts are offered in granular or briquette form, with or without anti-caking agent and dyed for identification purposes.
800 Neutral Salt
granular mixture containing barium chloride. Its low melting point and working range make it suitable for many steel heat treating operations. These include:
Heating for hardening.
Cycle and sub-critical annealing.
High temperature drawing.
Hot quenching of high alloy tool steels within it’s working range.
Especially suitable as a quenching and tempering medium for high speed steels.
It’s melting point is 850°F and its operating range is 925°F to 1,250°F.
900 Neutral Salt
Granular mixture containing barium chloride. Its low melting point and working range make it suitable for many steel heat treating operations. These include:
Heating for hardening.
Cycle and sub-critical annealing, high temperature drawing.
Hot quenching of high alloy tool steels within it’s working range.
Especially suitable as a hardening and tempering medium when parts are oil quenched, and then drawn at relatively high temperatures since no intermediate washing is required.
Less hygroscopic than 800 NEUTRAL SALT and only slightly harder to wash.
Its melting point is 920°F and its operating range is 1,000°F to 1,300°F.
Marquench B White WO
Economical non-eutectic nitrate/nitrite mixture similar to THERMO-QUENCH that can be used for the interrupted or isothermal quenching of austenitized steels where the lower melting point of Thermo-quench is not required. These processes include:
Austempering
Martempering
Marquenching and modifications or combinations thereof.
Tempering or “drawing” hardened steels.
Benefits:
Exceptionally fluid and completely water soluble salt with a relatively low melting point, wide working range and high thermal conductivity.
Its cooling rates, which increase with lower temperatures and/or agitation, are those required for the above- mentioned processes.
Small percentages of water may be added to MARQUENCH B WHITE W/O; such additions lower its melting point and increase its quenching power.
Can be used as a quench from any austenitizing medium, except cyanide-base salts.
Nu-Sal
Chloride mixture of low weight per cubic foot with excellent fluidity at operating temperature (1300-1650 F). Nu-Sal is easily washed from oil-quenched work because it is completely water soluble. Moreover it is not hygroscopic so it is less corrosive than other salts to the metal fixtures, electrodes, etc. Nu-Sal can be used for all neutral salt bath heating operations within its working range. These include
Austenitizing of carbon and low alloy steels for hardening
Reheating carburized steels
Annealing
Spheroidizing.
Nu-Sal is the ideal austenitizing medium for steels to be austempered, martempered, or otherwise isothermally quenched, because its fluidity minimizes drag-out and it dissolves readily in the salt bath quench.
Benefits:
Barium free.
Completely soluble in water.
Easy to wash in oil-cooled processes.
With a specific heat of 0.26, Nu-Sal heats rapidly and uniformly.
It is not hygroscopic, less corrosive than other salts for metal accessories, electrodes, etc.
It can be used as a pre-heat for high speed steel tools, replacing barium containing salts if it is desirable to use the preheat bath for austenitizing other types of steel.
Thermo-Quench
Eutectic nitrate/nitrite mixture that can be used for the interrupted or isothermal quenching of austenitized steels. These processes include:
Austempering
Martempering
Marquenching and modifications or combinations thereof.
Suitable for tempering or “drawing” hardened steels.
Benefits:
Exceptionally fluid and completely water soluble salt with a low melting point, wide working range and high thermal conductivity.
The molten salt has a specific heat of .37 and good thermal stability.
Its cooling rates, which increase with lower temperatures and/or agitation, are comparable to those furnished by good quenching oils.
Small percentages of water may be added to THERMO-QUENCH; such additions lower its melting point and increase its quenching power.
Can be used as a quench from any austenitizing medium, except cyanide-base salts.
Quenching Fluid
Oil based products designed for quenching intricately shaped metals and high hardness alloys. The operating temperature of these products ranges from 10°C to 82°C, although some products can reach 232°C.
50 Quench Oil
Produces high hardnesses in many types of steel ordinarily considered “water quenching”. In the initial stages of the quench, 50 QUENCH OIL cools like water. As the cooling nears the martensite formation range, this remarkable oil cools the steel slowly and uniformly to preclude cracking or distortion. The recommended operating temperature range is ambient to 120°F.
Benefits:
As effective at 50°F as it is at 120°F because of its low viscosity.
Ideal for steel treaters who have oil quenching tanks without heaters.
Lower consumption because oil dragout is greatly reduced.
Furnishes water quenched hardnesses with the lack of distortion associated with oil quenching.
400 Quench Oil
Designed to provide maximum cooling rates for austenitized steels. 400 QUENCH OIL is a version of AAA QUENCH OIL with extra additives. It is particularly useful when quenching parts with very high surface area to mass ratios such as with fasteners and will reduce or eliminate the need for additions. Its formulation guarantees good stability because the mineral base intensifier will not saponify, stratify, nor filter out. 400 QUENCH OIL can be used as a quench from any heating medium and is especially suitable for developing maximum oil-quenched hardnesses in medium and low alloy steels. It is widely used as a quenching medium for carbonitrided work where uniform quenching rates and clean, easily washed work are so important.
Benefits:
Achieves its faster cooling rates by an intensified action in the initial stages of quench cooling.
Heat removal is rapid in this critical range where transformation to soft structures must be avoided. The quench oil provides slower cooling through the martensitic transformation range. This insures that the higher and deeper hardnesses produced are not accompanied by increased warpage and breakage.
The quenching rates and viscosity of 400 QUENCH OIL were designed to satisfy a fast uniform quench.
If left on, it provides a thin film of protection from rust.
will not saponify or separate, neither can the intensifiers be filtered out.
The low viscosity maximizes uniformity of quench throughout a batch load and minimizes drag-out.
AAA Quench Oil
Designed to provide maximum cooling rates for austenitized steels. Its formulation guarantees good stability because the mineral base intensifier will not saponify, stratify, nor filter out. AAA QUENCH OIL can be used as a quench from any heating medium and is especially suitable for developing maximum oil-quenched hardnesses in medium and low alloy steels. It is widely used as a quenching medium for carbonitrided work where uniform quenching rates and clean, easily washed work are so important. It is recommended to use the product in a temperature range from 130°F to 160°F.
Benefits:
Achieves its faster cooling rates by an intensified action in the initial stages of quench cooling. Heat removal is rapid in this critical range where transformation to soft structures must be avoided.
Provides slower cooling through the martensitic transformation range. This insures that the higher and deeper hardnesses produced are not accompanied by increased warpage and breakage.
The quenching rates and viscosity of 400 QUENCH OIL were designed to satisfy a fast uniform quench.
Drains well and is easily washed from the work, where necessary.
If left on, it provides a thin film of protection from rust.
No matter what the temperature or the austenitized medium, AAA QUENCH OIL will not saponify or separate, neither can the intensifiers be filtered out.
The low viscosity maximizes uniformity of quench throughout a batch load and minimizes drag-out.
Marquench Oil M
Accelerated quench oil designed for applications at 250°F to 350°F. The use of the hot oil is commonly encountered in carburizing and carbonitriding furnaces, or in operations where parts are prone to distortion and cracking.
Benefits:
The accelerated cooling rate during the first stages of quenching enables the user to produce uniformly well hardened parts.
The higher operating temperature of the quenchant slows the cooling rate during martensitic transformation.
